Writing: This week I would like you to write a shape poem and  an acrostic poem. A shape poem is a poem shaped like the thing it describes. To begin choose a topic then brainstorm all the words that come to mind about your topic. Think of the way you'd like to present your poem, how will it be shaped. Be sure to check out the links above for examples and ideas.

An acrostic poem is a poem in which each line starts with the word or phrase that is the topic of your poem. Here is a useful link which will walk you through the process -

I would also like you to try these activities on some common literary devices often found in poetry. You could try one each day.

Measurement: Lessons 1-3

Posted: May 11, 2020

This week we  will start the Measurement Unit and look at calendar time and telling time on digital and analog clocks. I am posting these lessons in the image gallery for anyone who does not have a book.

In Lesson 1 you are introduced to a new concept - writing dates in metric notation. Some key things to remember are 1. Go from big to small - year, month, day; and 2. Always use 2 digits for each section, so if the month is February use 02 not just 2.

For Lessons 2 and 3, here is a link to a site which explains telling time on a clock and has some good activities. You can skip the intro if you want, and just click on Lessons at the bottom, and then it will bring up a list and click on Time.  http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me5l/html/Math5.html?launch=true

Try a few of the questions which go with each of the lessons in the book.

Writing: This week we will continue our focus on poetry. I am attaching a link to a fun poetry activity developed by an actual poet, Jack Prelutsky. We have read some of his poems before in class. Try working through the suggested activities and write your own poem/poems. You can focus on any topic you want or use his suggestions; or maybe focus on something related to spring. If you want to share your work or have questions just email me. I can share work without posting names.

Remember to continue to read 30 minutes every day. There are many books on the epic site, also you can access books on tumble books by following this link  https://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/Home.aspx?categoryID=77

Have a great week!

This week we will move on to subtracting decimals. Here are two web pages that explain the process. https://www.mathsisfun.com/subtracting-decimals.html https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/arith-decimals/arith-review-... It is the same method used as when you subtract whole numbers. Try some of the questions in Lessons 13 and 14. Then you can move on to the review questions on pages 216 and 217. Do #10 -14. If you want to have someone at home check your work and give you a mark out of 19 to see how you did on this unit.
