Hello my Grade 2 mathematicians! It’s a cold day!     :)

Put your thinking caps on for this one... You know what seems odd to me?......Numbers that can’t be divided by 2!! LOL

You will need spaghetti, macaroni and rice to use for the math!

Wednesday:

a)     Please select 5 small items from your living room…it could be a TV remote, coaster, lamp, throw pillow etc. and measure each item first with the macaroni, then with the spaghetti and lastly with the rice. On a piece of paper, write down your findings like this:    (you can make a chart if you want)

Example…  = 14 macaroni     1 spaghetti      30 rice

b)     Please select 2 big items like the couch, TV, coffee table etc. and ESTIMATE (close guess) how many macaroni you think you would use, then how many spaghetti and lastly how much rice. Use your actual numbers from measuring big items in the kitchen and bedroom to make a close guess.

For example, is your bed the same length as your couch? How many spaghetti did I count for my bed? How many spaghetti could I estimate for the couch?

Write down how many you think. Then choose 1 item to measure using ONLY macaroni or spaghetti or rice. Write down the actual number beside your estimated number. Were you close?

Have fun with measuring your items!! If you can, take pictures and send them to my email so I can see how you’re doing!!!

Then, please log on to Dreambox either on a tablet or home computer and get some coins by playing the games for at least 20 minutes.

Please email me at melissa.barry@nbed.nb.ca if you can’t find your Dreambox login information from the last online learning time or if you have any questions.

Thinking of you all!!

Hello my Grade 2 mathematicians! I hope you had some fun in the snow!     :)

Put your thinking caps on for this one... What's the tastiest unit of measurement? ...

             Millimeter (mm)!! LOL

Today we are starting our measurement unit! You will need spaghetti, macaroni and rice to use for the math!

Monday:

a)     Please select 5 small items from your kitchen…it could be a fork, spoon, spatula, plate, bowl, loaf of bread, cereal box etc. and measure each item first with the macaroni, then with the spaghetti and lastly with the rice. For example…lay a wooden spoon on a counter and line up the macaroni so that they touch (I couldn’t get my pictures of macaroni to touch) to see how many macaroni will fit side by side to equal the same length as the wooden spoon. If my macaroni were touching there would be 12 I figure. (please check email for the picture of spoon and macaroni)

On a piece of paper, write down your findings like this:    (you can make a chart if you want)

Wooden spoon = 12 macaroni     1 spaghetti      30 rice

a)     Please select 2 big items like your stove, fridge, dishwasher, island, table etc. and measure each item first with the macaroni, then with the spaghetti and lastly with the rice. Then write down your findings.

Have fun with measuring your items!! If you can, take pictures and send them to my email so I can see how you’re doing!!!

Hello, my Grade 4/5 Literary geniuses! I hope you’re staying warm…bbrrrr!  :)

Today, we are starting our next ‘Millerton News’ newspaper edition for February. You will have the entire at-home learning time to complete this assignment. As you are at-home learning creating the newspaper will look a little differently.  I will have everyone do the different parts of the newspaper (that you choose individually), and then when you return to school in your groups (groups will be different, you will find out what group you are in when you return) you will vote on the best one in your group. Then we will open the voting to the whole class to pick (anonymously) what goes into the newspaper!

Instructions:

  • All work must be done on Office 365…Please contact the school if you forget your login or password 627-4090. When you have completed the newspaper parts that you have chosen you can SHARE it with me at melissa.barry
  • Remember the newspaper is for the month of February…. themes to consider Valentine’s Day, Family Day, leap year, winter weather, winter sports (ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling)
  • Please choose 3 parts (example a, c and d) of the newspaper out of the following 5.

a)     An article about ‘how to’ do something with step-by-step procedures and pictures i.e., homemade Valentine’s cards, snow quinzhee etc.

b)     Movie or TV Series Review and Joke

c)     A current events article about Covid 19 in 2022 OR At Home Learning OR Your Own Choice
